An emotional week for several World War Two veterans from Iowa begins today. A group of veterans and their spouses left Waverly this morning for Saturday’s dedication of the newly built World War Two Memorial in Washington, D.C. The 80 Iowans are among more than 200 that are making the journey. Veterans groups from Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Huxley and West Burlington will also be among the crowd of more than 150-thousand people. The new memorial honors the 16-million soldiers who served in World War Two and the wives and families on the home front. The Waverly group plans to stop overnight in Elkhart, Indiana, and visit the Civil War battlefields at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, before arriving in the nation’s capital tomorrow. Group members will also partake in a reunion sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute before returning home on May 31st.
