College and high school basketball players will have additional opportunities to work on their skills as the number of summer leagues in the state grow. The Prime Time League in Iowa City opens its 18th season next week and has always been popular with Iowa Hawkeye fans.Iowa City attorney Randy Larson serves as commissioner and says the atmosphere allows fans to interact with players in a way they cannot during the basketball season.Larson is impressed with the Iowa players behavior with the fans.The league offers four games two nights a week and always draws large crowds at the North Liberty recreation center. The games are Monday and Thursday nights at 4:30, 6:00, 7:30 and 9:00.Womens’ basketball fans also can watch summer action with the Game Time League. Larson says both leagues start next week and are free to watch.The Prime Time League started when Tom Davis was the coach at Iowa. Davis is now at Drake and the YMCA- Capitol City League debuts next week. Des Moines attorney and former Hawkeye Troy Skinner is the commissioner. After discussing the Primetime league, Skinner felt the program would be beneficial. There will two high school players on each of the six teams as well as current college and ex-college players. High schoolers especially benefit from the program because they can get a feel for what they will be up against playing college ball.Skinner says summer leagues offer structured competition that pick-up games don’t.Skinner says it’s a family friendly environment with free admission.The league starts next Wednesday at Valley Southwoods.Games on Wednesday night begin at 5:30. Sunday competition starts at 4:30.
