Turnout in yesterday’s primary election was light according to the State Commissioner of Elections. Secretary of State Chet Culver says the good news is everything went according to plan and none of the voters who cast ballots in the state’s 19-hundred-80 precincts filed a complaint. This was the first election in Iowa to occur after new, federal Help America Vote Act requirements went into effect.Culver says “now the big race will really begin as we turn toward November 2nd and the general election.” A few Iowa precincts used what Culver terms “outdated” voting equipment for the last time yesterday. Culver says 83 precincts in six counties will be getting new machines within the month. The six counties will use the machines for the first time in the September 11th school board election. Culver says Ida, Crawford, Palo Alto, Keokuk will get the new machines Yesterday’s primary results in most cases set the names who’ll appear on November’s ballot. A candidate in a primary had to win at least 35 percent support.
