June 10, 2004 By admin

A former Olympic wrestler expects interest in his sport to grow during this Olympic year. Ken Chertow runs about a dozen training camps across the country, including one at Central College in Pella this week. He says enrollment is up about 50-percent and feels the Athens Games will boost interest. Women’s wrestling will be the only new sport in the Olympics this year and will hopefully help women’s wrestling in the U.S.Chertow says his camps emphasize the discipline and motivation it takes to succeed on the mat.Chertow strives to train kids for life at the camps as well as future athletics.Technique training is important but Chertow says HOW to practice is often overlooked. He trains kids to practice and train at higher levels in order for them to improve.
