The presidential election is just under four months away and county auditors across Iowa are being bombarded by thousands of absentee ballot requests. Scott County auditor Karen Fitzsimmons says a new law removed the requirement that people wait until 70-days before an election to request an absentee ballot. People can now request ballots at any time and Fitzsimmons says she’s “getting hundreds (of requests) every day” for absentee ballots for the November election. She says it’s great that people want to vote but the drive to get people to vote early is a bit overwhelming for her office. Fitzsimmons says two different groups, America Coming Together and the Iowa Democratic Party, are soliciting people to request absentee ballots, but many people are signing multiple requests — which is creating a problem, since, obviously, individuals are only allowed to cast one vote.
