An eastern Iowa factory is being shut down.Minnesota-based General Mills has announced plans to close its Iowa City factory next year, in the spring or summer, eliminating 83 jobs. The plant opened in 1993 and makes snacks for retail and food service customers, and packages all of the Pop Secret Popcorn sold in the U-S. General Mills officials say production will be consolidated with another facility to cut costs and increase efficiency. Local officials say hundreds of new jobs are coming to the area. Proposed changes to a downtown Iowa City mall could create 400 jobs, while Integrated D-N-A Technologies hopes to bring more than 200 jobs to Coralville over the next five years.
