Western Iowa democrats are calling for the resignations of the Cass County Sheriff and the County Attorney. The Cass County Democratic Central Committee met Tuesday in Atlantic to discuss last month’s report by the state auditor detailing an investigation into Sheriff Larry Jones and attorney James P. Barry. The report detailed questionable financial transactions, including the use of a county credit card by Jones’ son Darrell, and the purchase of a 12-thousand dollar S-U-V using unaudited funds controlled by Jones’ office along with three-thousand dollars from the county attorney’s office. An earlier auditor’s report questioned the storage at Barry’s home, weapons that were seized by the sheriff’s office during various raids, as well as Barry’s practice of ticket-fixing that created the appearance of “justice for sale.” Democrats say the men have caused irreparable harm to their offices, the county and community, and that they should resign immediately. Sheriff Larry Jones announced in April that he would not seek re-election this fall.
