The Iowa Games open today in Ames with the first of two weekends of competition. Iowa Games executive director Jim Hallihan says there is action in five sports on the opening day which is highlighted by tonight’s opening ceremonies. At the end of the ceremonies, last year’s male athlete of the year will light the caldron the holds the Iowa Games’ olympic-style flame. There’ll be skydivers and fireworks, too, at Jack Trice Stadium. Hallihan says a drop in the temperature will be welcomed by the competitors. Hallihan is encouraging everybody to drink plenty of water, but the forecast looks like temps won’t go too high. There will be competition in 41 sports this weekend.
