A committee appointed by leaders of Maharishi University in Fairfield after a fatal stabbing on campus this past March has released its recommendations. A classroom full of students saw a 24-year-old classmate stab another student in the face with a pen. Later the same day, about 70 people in the campus dining hall when that same student stabbed 19-year-old Levi Butler in the chest. Butler died at the scene. Twenty-four-year-old Shuvender Sem is pleading not guilty; he’s in a state prison awaiting trial. Maharishi University officials were under fire for not reporting the earlier stabbing incident to authorities, so they formed a committee to review campus security. The committee calls for having each student entered the school undergo a health and fitness exam. The panel also says it’s time to hire a full-time campus safety director and to launch a campus-wide safety education campaign. The full report may be read on-line at www.mum.edu.
