A Sheldon man will spend a dozen years in prison in connection with the death of a Sheldon teenager in 2002. 25-year-old Lathan Barnett pleaded guilty to several federal charges, including carrying a sawed-off shotgun during a crime, making sawed-off shotguns that were not registered, and using a short-barreled shotgun while unlawfully using marijuana. Barnett was sentenced to a total of 145 months in prison. Barnett also has to pay 83-hundred dollars restitution to the family of 17-year-old Shelley Gonnerman for medical and funeral expenses. She died from a blast from a 20-gauge shotgun that Barnett and co-defendant Shane Meyer had made. Barnett was holding the gun when it went off.
