Folks in the Governor’s booth at the Iowa State Fair are handling out pamphlets touting a program that helps low- and moderate-income Iowans buy a home. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor Sally Pederson staged a news conference at the fair this morning. Lieutenant Governor Sally Pederson says Iowa is a great state to live in, and there’s no better place to sell that message than the Iowa State Fair. Pederson invited a young couple and their two kids to the booth to tell their story. Ankeny native Jim Foreman and his wife, Tammy, lived in Chicago for five years after college. Foreman says when his wife was expecting their first son, “the Lord really placed it in our heart that we needed to be back to the state of Iowa to be with family and friends.” Tammy’s a stay-at-home mom and they’ve been able to live on Jim’s income in Des Moines, and buy a home. Tammy Foreman says they’re living a simpler life. She says there aren’t as many financial pressures or traffic headaches in Des Moines as there were in Chicago, and Foreman says they have no regrets about moving home. The Iowa Finance Authority is offering a “State Fair” special: a 15-hundred grant to help cover closing costs through its “FirstHome Plus” program.
