Des Moines police continue to investigate a fatal car-pedestrian accident early Friday morning. Two women were hit as they crossed a street on the western edge of the state fairgrounds, and one died. She’s identified as 20-year-old Randi Munch of Exira. A friend who was with her is hospitalized. Exira School Superintendent Charlie Johnson says Munch was an all-around athlete. Johnson says Munch was in volleyball, basketball, softball, and captain of the basketball team her senior year. Johnson says Munch was going to Grandview college in Des Moines and hoped to become a nurse. At Grandview he says she played softball and this summer was assistant softball coach in the Audubon school district, so he says she was also starting a coaching career. The 30-year-old Indianola woman driving the SUV that struck Munch and her friend, 20-year old Mallory Petersen, told police a group of people were crossing the street and she swerved to try and miss some who’d fallen down, when she struck the two young women. Exira School Superintendent Charlie Johnson says the school is prepared to help students deal with the loss. Monday they’ll have counselors at her old school though kids will have had the weekend to absorb the news. Mallory Petersen is recovering from injuries she suffered in the accident. Johnson says she suffered a concussion and some broken bones, for which she had surgery on Friday. The driver of the SUV was not hurt during the accident. This is the second time in less than four months an that an Exira student has been killed in a car accident. On April 26, Exira High School Senior Holly Jorgensen died when the vehicle she was driving was struck by a semi just West of Exira.
