Coe hopes to get back in title chase

August 24, 2004 By admin

The Coe College football team hopes to move back into championship contention this season. After earning a tie for the Iowa Conference title in 2002 the Kohawks slipped to 5-5 last season and 11 starters are back for coach Eric Raeburn . Raeburn says they felt like they were better than their record, but didn’t finish a lot of their games. He says they hope experience from last year will pay off this year.Among those back is quarterback Joe Brannen who needs just over 11-hundred yards to become the school’s all time passing leader. He says it’s a difficult position to play, so when you have a returning starter, it makes you feel good about your chances.Raeburn says beyond the returning starters there are several players who filled in last year due to injuries and that includes the offensive line.Raeburn says both sides of the ball have position battles which makes him optimistic. He says they’re anxious to get into some scrimmages to evaluate the position battles and see how the players respond.Coe opens the season at Westminster of Missouri on September fourth.
