If you found yourself getting out the sweater during August instead of sweating out the heat, state climatologist Harry Hillaker says it was indeed cooler than usual. Not all the numbers are in yet, but they appear to indicate the third-coolest August ever, with an average monthlong temp of 63 point-three degrees, about five degrees cooler than normal. Hillaker says the only cooler August readings, and also the coolest summers in recorded history, occurred in 1915 and in 1992. He says there’s no single weather factor to blame for the lack of scorching summer heat. A big high-pressure ridge over the western U.S. and a low over northeastern Canada have pulled the jetstream down over us, allowing cool Canadian air to come in our direction. If it hadn’t been for a warm spell the last week or so, Hillaker says the statistics would have been even more extreme. We’d been on pace to have the coolest August on record till about a week ago, he says, but this summer we’ve only had a couple times when there were three consecutive days of above-normal temps.
