Iowa lawmakers will return to the capitol in Des Moines tomorrow (Tuesday) for a planned one-day special session. Governor Tom Vilsack asked lawmakers to agree to convene to restore the economic-development bill passed last year that had created the Iowa Values Fund. A court this year ruled that the governor’s veto of a part of that bill was invalid, and nullified the whole bill, leaving in limbo some three-dozen businesses promised money from the fund. Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows says it should be a quick and easy day. He says lawmakers will come in and appropriate $100-Million, some of it earmarked for economic-development, some for community colleges and the state-supported universities. Iverson says the agreement now is the same as it was last year as it’s the same amount of money appropriated a year and-a-half ago when lawmakers wrote the original bill that created the Iowa Values Fund. The democratic governor said last week he’s disappointed that republican legislators have decided against re-establishing the Iowa Values economic development fund, and have decided to provide just enough money to pay the grants that’ve already been made and a little extra for grants in the pipeline. But the governor says he’ll work to get the whole package when lawmakers convene in regular session in January.
