Iowa fans of the fictional Superman are mourning Sunday’s death of actor Christopher Reeve, who portrayed the caped crime-fighter in the movies. Des Moines comic book store owner Matt Johnson says many of his customers say they’re feeling an emotional loss with the death of the 52-year-old Reeve, who personified their hero. Johnson says several people this morning have mentioned the actor’s death, though he admits “maybe it doesn’t hurt that I’m wearing a (Superman) t-shirt and have a Superman tattoo.” Johnson is co-owner of Cup o’ Kryptonite, a coffee shop and comic book store — named after the rocky-crystal that could sap Superman’s strength. Johnson says Reeve was an ideal choice for Superman in the movies. He says “When they cast him, they found the perfect style, look, man to play this iconic character. Since then, everybody draws Superman with the basic same look and Christopher Reeve was that look in human form. It’s almost like he leapt off out of the comic book. He was the real version of the comic book character.” He says the single best-selling comic book likely in all time was 11 years ago when Superman was killed off. Johnson says Reeve’s death is “far more tragic” as this was the “real Superman” who died. Reeve was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident nine years ago. Over the weekend, he suffered a heart attack, went into a coma and died Sunday without regainingconsciousness.
