Marshalltown Vets home gets new leader

October 14, 2004 By admin

The Veterans Home in Marshalltown will soon have a new administrator. Governor Tom Vilsack has appointed Daniel Steen to take the job of Commandant of the Iowa Veterans Home on November 15th. He’ll take over from interim commandant John Mathes of Newton. The soon-to-be-commandant served in the Navy during the Vietnam era. Since 1991, Steen’s been an administrator in several health facilities. He’s currently executive director of Calvin Community in Des Moines, an assisted living and nursing care facility. The Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown has over seven-hundred residents in its assisted living, nursing care and infirmary units. It’s the third-largest, state-run veterans home in the country, and was established 117 years ago to care for Civil War veterans.
