A grand jury in Fort Dodge ruled Thursday no charges will be filed against Dr. Daniel Cole, the Webster County medical examiner, who gunned down his wife’s ex-husband during a fight in August. Cole maintained the shooting death of 46-year-old Paul Benton was in self-defense. The grand jury met for two and a half days, reviewing evidence and hearing testimony behind closed doors. Cole was pleased with the decision but Benton’s family members were outraged, saying it was unjust. Benton was the father several children from a previous marriage to Shiela Cole, Dr. Daniel Cole’s wife. Police say the August 8th dispute which led to the shooting was over family matters and took place at Cole’s house in Fort Dodge.
