A grand jury has wrapped up its investigation into two former Cass County officials and decided against further action. In a report filed with the Cass County Clerk of Court Wednesday evening, the Grand Jury said that after hearing the testimony of witnesses, they would not press criminal charges against former Cass County Attorney James Barry and former Sheriff Larry Jones. Judge Robert A Hutchison removed the men from office last month for “maladministration and misconduct, ” following a civil trial brought by seven Atlantic residents. The residents had sought to oust the men from office under the auspices of a little-used state law. Their petitions alleged the pair reduced traffic sentences in exchange for cash, and used the money for questionable expenditures. The Jury’s decision means the investigation is now closed.
