For the second time this month, a school is being closed by whooping cough in northeast Iowa. Classes in the North Tama School District in Traer have been called off for tomorrow (Friday) because of the illness. Superintendent Tom McDermott says he decided to cancel classes so students and faculty can get treated by their doctors. He says with the number of students exposed to the person with the confirmed case, he says they felt it was the best way to get everyone to the doctor for needed medication.McDermott says nearly 175 people in the North Tama district have been exposed. It’s the first confirmed case of whooping cough at North Tama this year, but McDermott decided to call off classes in an effort to keep the illness from spreading. He says there are usually quite a few coughs and colds this time of year and it can be difficult to tell what students have. School was cancelled in the Bremer county town of Tripoli on October fifth after health officials confirmed a case of whooping cough in that district. More than 100 students have come down with the illness in Waterloo, but so far that district hasn’t cancelled any classes.
