Two Iowa teens and their family members have been banned from competing at the Iowa State Fair for one year. Random drug tests performed at the fair in August on the steers of 13-year old Weston Brandt of Corning and 15-year old Kelsy Ford of Milo revealed traces of the sedative Thorazine. As a result, the two 4-Hers and their families will have to sit out the 2005 fair. The tranquilizer is only permitted if administered by the fair veterinarian. Brandt’s father says he gave the steer thorazine to quiet the animal and prevent him from acting up. Ford’s father says a veterinarian administered the drug to the steer before the competition. State Fair manager Gary Slater says the fair board imposed the minimum penalty because Thorazine is not a performing enhancing drug. Ford plans on appealing the ban while Brandt does not.
