The son of U.S. Senate candidate Art Small has organized a “Democrats for Life” chapter. Peter Small of Iowa City says he started working on the project “well before” his father decided to run for the Senate. “In large part, it was a response to the lack of any pro-life voices in the presidential caucuses.” Small says formerly pro-life democrats like Dick Gephardt and Dennis Kucinich were pressured into changing their minds on abortion. Small staged a kick-off news conference today for their new “Democrats for Life” chapter, and chose heavily-Catholic Dubuque as the site for it. He says Dubuque is an area that’s know as very democratic and very pro-life.Kristen Day, the national director of the “Democrats for Life” organization, says a poll last December found 43 percent of Democrats believe abortion is manslaughter, but she says their voices are not being heard. “The Democratic Party’s platform really wasn’t very inclusive to pro-life Democrats,” Day says. “There are pro-life Democrats around the country who feel like they’re alone. A lot of pro-life Democrats are voting for Republicans…and we really need to get the message out there that you can be pro-life and (a) Democrat.” The group has a website — www.democratsforlife.org.
