The state high school football playoffs open across the state tonight. In class 3A, Winterset plays its first playoff game in 11 years with a visit to Clear Lake . Coach Zach Sweeney’s 6-3 squad is in the playoffs following a 2-7 2003 season and Sweeney wonders about the playing surface. He says Clear Lake had two home games last week and had a lot of rain, so it could be a real mudhole between the 20 yard lines. Sweeney says they means they’ll need good execution. Sweeney’s team is led by the backfield tandem of Skylar Speer and Josh Abel. He says in a different scheme each of the backs could be a one-thousand or 12-hundred yard back. While Winterset hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1993, they face a Clear Lake team making its 7th straight trip. He says they’re a hard work no nonsense team that executes very well and has a very aggressive defense.
