Iowa basketball coach Steve Alford has not yet decided on a starting line-up for Friday night’s season opener against Western Illinois. Alford says the health of Adam Haluska has delayed a final decision. The Iowa State transfer spent much of preseason practice battling injury, and Alford says he has practiced well. As opposed to the past couple of seasons the Hawkeyes have depth and experience. One freshman that will make an impact is Carlton Reed out of Waterloo East. He says is Reed can continue to make shots it can be a big shot in the arm. He says he also expects Reed to develop into a good defender. After an upcoming trip to the Maui Invitational the Hawkeyes will play eight of ten games at home. Alford says how they play at home will be a major factor in the season, he says it can be a very good year if they get off to a good start at home. He says they then need to “steal some games on the road.”The Hawkeyes enter the season looking for their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2001.
