The high school football season comes to a close in the UNI-Dome with champions crowned in six classes over two days. It begins Friday morning with the title game in class A as tenth rated North Mahaska takes on number three West Bend-Mallard. North Mahaska coach Steve Ehret says it is easy to see why the Wolverines are unbeaten as he says they’re very physical and come at you and hit you in the mouth. He says his kids can’t back down. Ehret says the West Bend-Mallard defense has no weakness and offensively he says they get off the ball well and are well coached. He calls them one of the premiere programs in the state in Class A.
West Bend-Mallard will be in search of a fourth title since 1994. North Mahaska is making its first appearance in the title game since 1995.
In the class 1A championship top ranked Council Bluffs St. Albert goes up against number seven Gladbrook-Reinbeck. St. Albert may be without fullback Aaron Romano who was injured in a semifinal round win over AGWSR. Falcons’ coach Adam Kahl says you have to go with what you’ve got.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck coach Chris Ehrhardt says the success of this season began when last season ended. He says they didn’t like the 4-5 record last year and hit the weights hard. He says they knew they had a tough district, but thought they could compete. The high school championship games conclude with three more games on Saturday. The opener is the eight-man title contest as second ranked Adair-Casey plays number three Remsen St. Mary’s. Adair-Casey coach Wade Anderson says the Bombers need to find a way to slow down the St. Marys ground attack. Anderson says the Bombers will need to be more creative to move the ball. This is Adair-Casey’s fourth appearance in the championship game in five years.
