Kids who enjoy coloring with crayons can now wrap their fingers around a corn-yellow crayon called A-maize-ing Iowa. It’s in the new box honoring all 50 states from Crayola, where spokeswoman Stacy Gabrielle says someone in North Carolina submitted the color name “A-maize-ing Iowa” as part of a contest that generated 25-thousand suggestions for the 50 state crayons.Gabrielle says it was a creative play on maize, or corn, a product Iowa’s well-known for producing. The collector’s crayon collection was put on store shelves earlier this month honoring Iowa and the other states in a package of 64 crayons. There’s one color for each state, one each for Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, then another 12 crayons in patriotic colors like America the Blue-ti-ful or Yankee Doodle Dandelion. Looking at the map, there’s a patch of yellow across the nation’s midsection — Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Kansas are all some hue of yellow. Gabrielle says that’s coincidence. Wisconsin is “Moo-velous Cheese” and Nebraska’s crayon is “Cornhusker Yellow” while Kansas is Yellow Brick Road. For more information, surf to “www.crayola.com”.
