If there’s something different about the sound of holiday bells…they might have moved. Business experts agree the department-store chain known as Target has been hugely successful, using innovative branding and marketing to grow till it engulfed its founder Dayton-Hudson, as well as merger partners including Chicago’s Marshall Fields and California’s Mervyn stores. But they’re shaking their heads over Target’s decision to ban the bell-ringers this year. Salvation Army collection kettles were always welcome at the doors of Target stores, though managers now say they’ve had a policy for years against letting anyone solicit…they just made an exception for the red kettles. This year there’s no place at the door, however. Salvation Army leaders won’t say they’re bound to take in less money, but they’ve been looking for other places to ring their bells and try and ring in enough operating cash for the charity.
