DNR investigates fish kills near Carroll

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is still sorting out details after a pair of fishkills were discovered in western Iowa’s Elk Run Creek near Carroll. Problems surfaced in early November when D-N-R officials stumbled upon two separate fishkill incidents just a week apart in the North Raccoon River tributary. An investigation points to several polution sources. Manure run-off from at least three cattle lots is believed to have contributed to last month’s problems in Elk Run Creek. D-N-R officials have indicated however that water quality in the creek has been poor for some time, with some local residents apparently telling the agency that have just accepted occasional run-off and polution. The D-N-R says its investigation is continuing, and they are encouraging those in the area to report any problems or contamination they notice.
