A new computer system for registering and issuing vehicle titles goes on-line today (Monday) after treasurers in Iowa’s 99 counties spent the weekend transfering records. A spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Transportation says some treasurers’ offices are closed today as they do final work in getting the system up and running. Polk County Treasurer Mary Maloney oversees the system for Iowa’s largest county and she says all treasurers are asking you to cut them a little slack in the transition. She says system is new in all 99 counties and the DOT did a great job of training over 700 people in using the new system, but she says some of them were trained in July, and it’s now January. “We think it will take a little while for us to king of get our seas legs with it, so we’re asking for the public’s patience as we kind of get used to the new system,” she says. Maloney says once they get the hang of the new system, it’ll be faster and more convenient for everyone. She says they’ll actually be entering less information, so there’ll be less chance of an error, and it’ll increase productivity. Maloney says you can help out by not rushing in right away today if you can wait for your renewal or title. She says that would put a little less pressure on the new system on the first day and allow them to get more proficient with the system. She says you can still go to www.getyourtags.com and renew your license plates on-line. The new system has been in the planning stages for five years and replaces the 20-year-old system treasurers had been using.
