Fire struck a building in the town square of the southeast Iowa town of Fairfield early today. Traffic is blocked as fire crew fight a blaze in an upper level apartment. Crews were believed to have been called at around 3:45 a.m. as a part-time firefighter driving by saw smoke and made the call. One person who was sleeping in the upper level was known to have jumped out the window. The unidentified person is now at Jefferson County Hospital. Fire crews from Fairfield, Packwood, Libertyville, Lockridge, and Mt. Pleasant are on the scene. Crews were worried about propane cylinders in the upper level, which has been undergoing renovation for some time.
