A grand jury’s indicted an Iowa sheriff’s deputy in a fatal shooting five weeks ago. The grand jury was chosen to investigate the death of 41-year-old Wayne Jens of Hancock. He led officers on a chase through western Iowa on December 30, until he was stopped at a police roadblock. One of the pursuing officers was a K-9 handler who normally worked road patrols. As he approached the car and Jens turned and took something metallic from his pocket, 28-year-old Shelby County deputy Chad Butler fired, killing Jens. The man’s 12-year-old daughter had been in the car during the chase and told officers her father was getting out a cellphone and did not have a gun in the car. Now the grand jury’s returned an indictment on a charge of voluntary manslaughter.
