Newton racetrack construction set for later this month

June 15, 2005 By admin

Construction will begin later this month on the new “Iowa Speedway” near Newton. The 7/8th mile asphalt oval will have 25-thousand permanent seats. A Groundbreaking ceremony is set for June 21st.General manager Todd Melfi says it’s taken a long time and a lot of hours in getting the project going. He says how soon construction is finished will depend on mother nature. He says they have a lot of heavy equipment to move a lot of dirt fast and if they can get a lot of work done without rain delays, they could have races as early as July of next year. Melfi says track designer and veteran NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace will be at the groundbreaking as well as his son Steven who is an up and coming driver.
