The West Union city council has taken another step toward an ordinance to ban pit bulls. The first reading of the new ordinance will take place at the next meeting. The ordinance prohibits the introduction of any new pit bulls within the city limits. It also places restrictions on present owners of pit bulls in the city. It calls for those dogs to be leashed and muzzled when outdoors with their owners. The dogs are not allowed outdoors unattended or tied to an object and warning signs mush be posted on the owner’s property. The council also addressed letters to the city concerning the new ordinance and why it targets one breed of dog. The city attorney cited studies that indicate pit bulls do not bite any more than other breeds, however their attacks are generally more severe and more fatal than other breeds.
