A North English man is dead after his ultralight plane crashed in a cornfield southwest of town. 62-year-old Wayne Silver was the only passenger in the plane when it crashed Tuesday afternoon– landing about one mile off Keokuk County Road G-13 around 3:30. Silver owned the small private airstrip outside North English where he had taken off for the flight. People gathered at the airstrip as word of the crash spread. Friends say Silver was an experienced pilot who flew planes as a hobby. He had acquired the ultralight plane earlier in the summer, and is said to have flown often. Ultralights are small, experimental aircraft developed from hang-gliders by adding engines and landing gear. These planes require no registration. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
