Former British Prime Minister John Majors was in Storm Lake last (Friday) night for the William Siebens American Heritage Lecture at Buena Vista University. During an afternoon press conference, Majors was asked about the tremendous damage the U.S. gulf coast received from Hurricane Katrina and what effect it will have on the country’s economy. He says you have to haul in the deficit eventually either by spending less, changing the tax structure, or seeing growth accelerate as the economic growth moves on. Majors was also asked about the “war on terror” and its keys to victory. “To call it a war on terror is a misnomer” because there is not an enemy you can identify. Majors says there’s a large number of small groups with different aims who’re ruthless. He says to be victorious, the terrorists must be robbed of their finances and safe havens. Majors says he hasn’t been to Iowa “for a long time”, but he does spend about two months a year in the United States. His father was raised in Pennsylvania and Majors considers it a second home. After the lecture, Majors fielded questions from a panel of Buena Vista students.
