Officials with the Iowa City chapter of a cancer-fighting charity now say they raised more than 100-thousand dollars with Sunday’s “Light Up The Night” event. About 800 cancer survivors and supporters took part in the nighttime walk to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. One walker, Jim Cayton, a teacher at Mid Prairie High School, says it was a significant event for him. Cayton says “My wife in 2000 was diagnosed with leukemia, had a bone marrow transplant, and this year she actually had a relapse.” Cayton carried a red helium-filled balloon, illuminated inside by a small flashlight bulb. Cancer survivors carried white balloons, also lit from within. Many of Cayton’s students marched alongside him to show their solidarity, which he says was moving. Cayton says “I’ve been a high school teacher for 21 years and those kids do great things and you give them the chance to volunteer and they’re going to step up to it.” The Mid Prairie High team alone raised around four-thousand dollars. Organizers of the walk say the money will go toward funding to find cures for a variety of cancers.
