First race set for Newton track

October 6, 2005 By admin

Questions may cloud the financing of a planned racetrack in Newton, but organizers have already booked its first event. The first race is set for September fifteenth 2006 at the “Iowa Speedway.” General Manager Todd Melfi says about sixty drivers in the “Hooters Pro Cup Series” will come to the Newton track hoping to qualify to be among the 36 to run a 250-lap race.Melfi says not only will race fans get to see a good stock-car touring series in the Hooters Pro Cup series, but they’ll get to see the “best of the best of that series,” the shootoff for 250 laps around the 7-eighths-mile oval that he says is going to be “a heck of a show.” Melfi says it’ll be a good race for the Iowa Speedway and for ARCA. ARCA is considered a minor-league series where successful drivers may win their way to higher levels like NASCAR. The Hooters Pro Cup Series has a north and south division. Noth run a regular season, and then the top drivers from both divisions advance to the championship series, to determine a national champion. In addition to their September event, the ARCA / ReMax stock car series will visit the Iowa Speedway October fifteenth of next year.
