No charges will be filed in the death of a Michigan man found dead on Interstate-80 early today. Sergeant Brad Pollard from State Patrol District 3 in western Iowa says a pickup with a topper on it was westbound with three men heading for a hunting trip. The driver and a passenger were in the cab, and a third man in back, inside a pickup topper, a pretty common arrangement among hunters who’ll plan to nap in the truck when they get to their hunting spot. 60-year-old Clifford Baker, of Reed City, Michigan was the third man, but when the driver stopped, the trooper says he thought Baker must have been left at the last stop. At the I-80 Underwood rest area the men found their passenger wasn’t back in the bed of the truck. They took off heading back westward but before they arrived at their last stop, the Adair rest area, they found Baker on the road, with state troopers who’d been called. Passing motorists had phoned 911 to report a man lying on the Interstate. The report wasn’t detailed, perhaps in part because there was a heavy fog advisory this morning. The pickup also was pulling a trailer, and troopers think the man got out of the back of the truck, and fell between the pickup and the trailer. Sergeant Pollard says it’s somewhat of a mystery, but the driver and other passenger aren’t charged with any wrongdoing and we probably know as much about the case as anyone’s going to.
