With their championship hopes gone the goal now changes for the Drake football team. The Bulldogs bid for a second straight Pioneer Football League championship ended with a 31-26 loss at the University of San Diego. Drake coach Rob Ash says it’s disappointing, even heartbreaking to lose. He says in the end they had the ball longer, and he says it was one of the best performances by one of his teams and they have nothing to hang their heads about. The Bulldogs are 3-4 overall and now must win their final three games to have a winning season. He says that will be the story of the season that the best they can do is 6-4. Ash says that won’t mean this has been a mediocre team, he says they had two very close games in the conference. There are not many seniors on the team but Ash says that group needs to provide leadership down the stretch. He says the seniors have to keep the rest of the team playing for this year and to not start playing for next year.Drake will play host to a winless Butler team that will have added motivation after coach Kim Cartwright was fired on Tuesday. He says Cartwright will come in with a group of guys who will play hard to try and win the game for their coach.
