The board that governs the three state universities will consider a proposal to raise undergraduate tuition at its meeting next week in Iowa City. This will be the first time the State Board of Regents considers a tuition increase under a new rule they passed that allows each university president to recommend a different level of increase. The president of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls is recommending the largest increase of five-point-five percent, or 310 dollars. The University of Iowa in Iowa City is recommending a four-point-five percent increase or 253 dollars. And Iowa State University in Ames is recommending a four percent increase — or 226 dollars. If the increase is approved, it would bump the cost of tuition and fees for in-state students to around 58-hundred dollars for Iowa and Iowa State, and 59-hundred at U-N-I. The regents will discuss the increase at next weeks meeting, then again in November, and would not take final action on the increase until their meeting in December.
