Today (Wednesday) is Lung Health Day in Iowa. Sherie Wheeler, a registered respiratory therapist with the American Lung Association of Iowa, says there are many things out there that can impact our lungs. She says we have lots of second-hand smoke, air pollution, allergens, rural farming communities that contribute some threats, and cigarette smoking. Wheeler says there are ways to protect your lungs. She says they encourage everyone to eat right, exercise and reduce stress. Smokers can stop smoking. She says people with lung conditions should pay attention to high pollution days and avoid the outdoors during peak hours. And she encourages people to get their flu shots. Wheeler says the Lung Association has a website to help you learn more about keeping your lungs healthy. She says you can learn about all different sorts of diseases and where to go for help at: www.yourlunghealth.org. This is also National Respiratory Care Week.
