Governor Tom Vilsack says he has not reviewed the proposed tuition increases for students at Iowa, Iowa State and U-N-I, but believes university officials are going in the right direction.

Vilsack says it’s important to have strong, high-quality universities and the Board of Regents which governs the schools is looking at creative ways to do that. Tuition and fees for undergrads from Iowa would go up four percent at Iowa State, four-and-a-half percent at Iowa and five-and-a-half percent at U-N-I.

Student leaders at each of the schools endorsed that plan at the Board of Regents meeting earlier this month. Vilsack says he’s thankful the proposed tuition increases are “not as dramatic as they have been in the past.” During leaner years in the 1980s and ’90s, the Board of Regents adopted double-digit increases in tuition rates.
