The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says their investigation into a fish kill on Brushy Creek southwest of Carroll has located up to 15 possible sources of manure into the stream. D-N-R environmental specialist Matt Rhodes says the manure appears to have leaked into the creek from small cattle feedlots.

Rhodes says it appears to be a combination of things, some chronic runoff, some from snowmelt, and maybe some issues with structures holding manure. Rhodes says they’re still trying to count all the fish that’re dead.He says they figure it was a total fish kill for an undetermined length of the creek.

Rhodes says they don’t have many options. He says there’s not much they can do to mitigate the damage as the manure is already in the creek, and it will be up to the producers to try and to something. Rhodes says they’re still asking anyone with information regarding the manure releases to contact the D-N-R Atlantic field office.
