Murder-suicide shuts down school in Wapello

January 7, 2006 By admin

A murder-suicide in eastern Iowa had a local school locked down for a time Friday afternoon. Police called to the scene of the reported shooting in Wapello say the incident happened across the street from the high school. They were called just after one P.M. and found 22-year-old Jessie Smith dead at the scene. Neighbors tell the Muscatine Journal the couple who lived in the house had often fought and Smith had moved out a couple weeks earlier, taking the couple’s young son. A 4-year-old boy airlifted from the scene to University hospitals and a 25-year-old man life-flighted to a Burlington hospital were both dead on arrival.
