NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace paid a visit to the construction site of the Iowa Speedway this morning. The former NASCAR champion owns a portion of the speedway and is the first driver to design a track. Wallace says he feels like they can put on better races if the drivers get involved. Wallace says this should be a track where you can pass and he says it’s the first track in the world with removal soft-wall technology.

Wallace says the Iowa Speedway has a number of unique qualities including the fact it is the only 7/8ths mile track in the country. He says it will be a great track to test on as well as race. He says cup cars and test on the track. Wallace hopes much of the testing by Nextel Cup teams will be open to the public. He says unless the people who rent the track request a closed track, he’ll try to bring fans out to see the testing.

Racing at the track will begin this Fall and Wallace says the ultimate goal is for the Iowa Speedway to eventually land a NASCAR sanctioned event. Wallace says NASCAR loves to see events first to get a view of the track and evaluate it. He says they have the infrastructure in place to build more seating if needed. The Iowa Speedway will have seating for 28 thousand when it opens later this year.
