The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled a northwest Iowa man is guilty of stalking, but didn’t use a “dangerous weapon” against his ex-girlfriend. The opinion says Michael Greene is guilty of stalking Kathy Miller after their relationship soured and she moved out of his house.

Miller’s Milford home and her car were spray painted with graffiti, he threw a rock through her window and a dead skunk into the house. He also started putting metal signs up around town that made negative comments about the woman. The high court has upheld his convictions on stalking and criminal mischief, but said the steel shards he rigged up to deflate the tires on her car were not dangerous weapons.

A jury found those razor-sharp pieces of steel to be dangerous weapons, but the Iowa Supreme Court says they were meant to flatten a tire, not kill someone. The 46-year-old Greene is currently in prison and this ruling will likely cut some time off his 10-year prison sentence. He had previous served time for torching another former girlfriend’s home.
