Union County officials are trying to clean up a diesel fuel spill in a creek on the east edge of Creston. Union County Emergency Management Coordinator Roger Nurnberg says icy conditions made it tough to contain the fuel. He says they had trouble getting equipment out to stop the creek, but they were able to work with the city and hall dirt in and dam up the creek to contain the spill.

Nurnberg says there hasn’t been any environmental impact that he can see. He says the creek does not have enough water in it for fish, so there’s no fish kill. Nurnberg says the origin of the diesel fuel is still a mystery.

He says the source of the spill isn’t know as he says it’s coming out of the ground and may be coming out of some drainage tile. Nurnberg says state and local officials are searching for the source of the fuel.
