A long-time foe of a big-box chain store will make pre-trial statements in a lawsuit today in Iowa City. Gary Sanders fought Wal-Mart when it first proposed to build a store in Iowa City, more than fifteen years ago. He lost and Wal-mart built on the south side of town. Now it’s purchased more land at the same location and plans to build a bigger Wal-Mart “Super-Center.” Sanders is suing the city council and board of adjustment, saying they cleared the way with rezoning and other accomodations with undue haste and in spite of information he gave them about Wal-Mart’s low pay and poor working conditions. The suit says the Iowa City zoning board and city council abused their discretion and made arbitrary and capricious decisions favoring Wal-Mart’s expansion.
