An elderly man who’s called central Iowa home for more than 46 years is facing deportation. A federal appeals court Tuesday upheld revoking the citizenship of a former Nazi concentration camp guard, an 81-year-old man who lives in Des Moines.

John Hansl moved here from Germany after being granted his citizenship in 1960. Hansl says he took part in none of the atrocities at the camp near Berlin where thousands were killed during just two years of World War Two.

Hansl was born in what’s now Croatia and was drafted at 18. Hansl’s daughter cares for her aging father, who has a host of health problems, and vows she’ll ask for another review by the appeals court. They may ultimately have to go before the U.S. Supreme Court.
