Two top officials at the University of Iowa says an investigation is underway into the school’s football program. U-of-I President David Skorton and Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby released a statement saying the school is investigating allegations against as many as five Hawkeye football players.

The allegations say the players, who were not named in the statement, may have received preferential treatment in obtaining merchandise from an employee of a cell phone company in exchange for tickets to the 2006 Outback Bowl.

The release says the U-of-I’s office of General Counsel and the athletic department are investigating the allegations and hope to complete the investigation as soon as possible –maybe within 30 days. The Hawkeyes opened spring practice Wednesday, but coach Kirk Ferentz did not mention the investigation during a meeting with the media.
